in eastern ukraine. it had been occupied by pro-russian demonstrators since the weekend. >> agreed to a nato request to hold a special meeting today to discuss this crisis. also on the diplomatic front, john kerry is expected to meet with russian foreign minister in paris. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is going to be john kerry's first face-to-face meeting with his russian counterpart since this crisis began. the russian foreign minister has said the threat of sanctions will not change his government's position. obviously, the situation remains tense. overnight, white house officials here explain they're still pushing what they call this diplomatic off ramp for russia if russian troops return to their bases. the escalating crisis in ukraine put a microscope on the rocky relationship between barack obama and vladimir putin. the two presidents delivering competing televised messages. mr. obama ridiculing the

justification for sending troops into crimea. >> president putin seems to have a different set of lawyers making a different set of interpretations. i don't think that's fooling anybody. >> a former u.s. official described putin as emotional, showing off his angry side tuesday. the russian leader denied his troops occupied crimea, accusing the u.s. government from interfering as if they were running experiments on rats without any understanding of the consequences. it's the latest rift in a relationship strained in recent months by sharp disagreements over syria and nsa leaker edward snowden. the leaders' exchanges producing awkward photo ops. as for putin, the horseback riding, race car driving, former kgb spy seems to relish playing up his image of the strong man.

>> peter alexander with all the latest from the white house. thank you. a look now at a tragic situation under investigation in new jersey this morning. a massive explosion triggered by a gas leak that killed at least one woman and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes. tracy strahan from wnbc, our sister station here in new york, is at the scene. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning, where officials will be returning in about an hour from now with what's left of these homes. homes reduced to rubble here. they'll be trying to pinpoint what exactly led to the massive blast that led to several terrifying moments. >> this loud explosion shook me up, paintings on the wall fell. there was a crack in one of my walls. >> officials say the explosion happened tuesday after workers who were trying to make electrical repairs hit a gas line at a condominium complex in new jersey. >> the person that was operating

down there felt they had struck something. the explosions just happened. we're not sure how it happened. >> they shook the house and just a terrible, terrible explosion. >> the explosion killed one woman, injuring seven others, the blast so severe it damaged as many as 55 homes in the complex causing an aftermath that looked like a tornado had struck. >> looked in the sky and you can see all the insulation and debris coming down. we thought maybe ha plane crashed. >> reporter: now, police say none of the injuries were life threatening. and we're hearing that safety officials from osha will be back on the scene conducting their own investigations into this explosion, matt. >> tracy, thank you very much. >> meantime now, the story of a lawmaker facing serious accusations and denying them this morning. >> that's right, a florida congressman now denying an allegation this morning that he shoved his estranged wife during a heated altercation. kristen, good morning.

>> good morning to you. congressman gracin and his wife are in the middle of a bitter divorce. he was accused of pushing his wife, accusations he strongly denies. >> it's not true. it's not an incident at all. it's not the way she described it. >> reporter: democratic congressman alan gracin is denying allegations that he shoved his wife. according to court documents filed monday and obtained by the sentinel, ms. grayson accused her husband of showing up unannounced over the weekend and deliberately and with force pushed her hard against the door, causing her to fall to the ground. but grayson tells a different story. >> then what happened? >> i retreated. that's what happened. >> reporter: congressman grayson's office released a statement saying witnesses at the scene during the time in question also reject miss grayson's versions of events as

an outright lie. sadly it was ms. grayson who attacked the congressman as he attempted to visit with his children. this incident report shows authorities are investigating an allegation of battery and a spokesperson for the orange county sheriff's office confirms they are conducting a domestic violence investigation with the grayson family. the family drama comes as grayson is seeking reelection. he was first elected in 2008, lost reelection in 2010 and won again two years ago. when asked if he could put the incident behind him, the congressman continued to defend himself. >> there's nothing to put behind. she's simply lying. and i think our statement makes that clear. >> now, the congressman was not arrested and faces no charges, during a telephone conversation, a woman who identified herself as lolita grayson said no comment when asked about the incident. the couple has five children. >> kristen welker in washington,

thank you, kristen. president obama heads to connecticut today to continue his push for the hike in the minimum wage. the president wants congress to raise the hourly rate from $7.25 to $10.10. he's also asked state lawmakers to raise it even further in line with president obama's proposal. the next generation of the bush political dynasty took a step toward statewide office in texas. george t. bush, son of jeb bush, easily won the republican nomination for texas land commissioner tuesday night. and in texas governor's race, state senator wendy davis will be the democratic party's candidate. she'll face greg abbott in november. and we have some video this morning of dramatic rescue in daytona beach, florida, after a minivan with three children inside drove into the atlantic ocean on tuesday. bystanders jumped into action carrying two of the children to the beach. waves made it difficult for rescuers to get to the third

child. they eventually did and pulled the little one to safety. investigators aren't sure why the woman drove into the water. she is currently undergoing a mental evaluation, though. well, if you needed any proof this morning it is generally not any good to get caught in the middle, especially in a hockey game. here it is from an avalanche/blackhawks game in chicago. some punches are thrown and one caught the game official in the face. he did go down, but got right back up, al, and put him into the fight and no penalty. >> no penalties there? >> which, i guess, you know, they're used to it in hockey. >> i thought that would've cost somebody. natalie, thank you. >> mr. rock ker? >> we're going to show this for two reasons. one, it's really cool. the other is i get to say niagara falls! >> slow the ice turns. >> step by step, inch by inch.

you'll find the fog. just a mission of high clouds in san jose. 71 degrees here. 69 peninsula. san francisco, at 64 degrees today shower moving into the city after 2:00 p.m. we'll have to wait on that rain out bay until after 4:00 p.m. so it could be a slow commute home this evening. >> that's your latest weather. for those of you not old enough to remember the abbott and costello/three stooges niagara falls, we'll show it at 7:30. >> we'll all be culturally informed. now to a family dispute in new jersey. this one's getting worldwide attention. an 18-year-old girl taking her parents to court seeking financial support after she left home. nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> well, this case boils down to an age old problem, teenagers versus their parents. a battle normally fought at home, not in a courtroom in front of a judge and tv cameras.

the actual hearing has yet to begin. but an early motion went squarely in the parents' favor. >> she's always going to be your daughter. and they're always going to be your parents. >> the truth laid bare in the courtroom. 18-year-old rachel is suing her parents for money they won't give her to finish high school and go to college. the court session was the first time they'd seen each other since october. there were no embraces, not even a hello. at times, rachel's parents wept. their daughter, an honor roll student, athlete and cheerleader left home last fall under circumstances that each side disputes disputes. in the lawsuit she claims she was subjected to severe and excessive verbal and physical abuse by my mother and father. >> these people have not come to see her, they have not sent a penny to her. >> her parents deny any abuse

and say they were laying down the law for a teenager who was suspended from school, drinking and dating a boy they really didn't like. >> come home subject to these rules. >> on his facebook page, sean canning a former police chief says his daughter's allegations simply never happened. in tuesday's court session, rachel's lawyer argued she needed emergency financial assistance while the case proceeded. the judge did not agree. >> we want to establish a precedent where parents live in constant fear of establishing basic rules of the house. if they institute a rule that junior doesn't like, junior can move out, move in with another family, he can sue for child support, car, cell phone, and a few hundred grand in college. >> for the moment, rachel's living with the family of a close friend.

they are paying living expenses and legal fees. the judge recommend the family seek counseling before they come back in april. >> stephanie gosk on the story for us. thanks very much. nbc legal analyst, former prosecutor and defense attorney who has worked as a legal advocate for children. karen, good morning, nice to see you. >> good morning, matt. >> hard to watch this. you're watching a family unit coming apart at the seams in front of your eyes. how often are these cases brought? >> they're kind of reserved for celebrities. people who have a lot of money. you see these in the context of custody or divorce cases, but not a married couple with a child who wants cash. >> charges and counter charges. the daughter says she was basically kicked out of the house. the parents say she left because she refused to obey our rules. brings up the concept of emancipation. legally speaking when it comes to a family, how is it defined? >> okay. in new jersey, there's case law that says if you're under 21,

you can be an unemancipated adult. if you're vulnerable like she is, the court can say you have an obligation to support them if you were doing that in the past. if she was under the sphere of their influence, there is case law that says that she is entitled to some payment. >> meanwhile, the parents say she's welcome to come home, but there's an e-mail that says i don't want to come home. does that weaken her case? >> i don't know. that sounds like a teenager to me, right? >> right. >> she's going to say i was abandoned, neglected. and the parents are going to say she didn't want to follow our rules. she's being a spoiled brat and nothing more than that. >> the judge sent them away, please seek counseling. he clearly is trying to avoid this going to trial. why? what precedent is he trying to avoid? >> i think he's probably trying to avoid violence at this point because i know if it was my parents, my head would be on the other side of the courtroom floor. if you're a judge, you don't

want to start a precedent like that. what if it is the case where the parents just want them to follow the rules, are you going to say -- what's the first thing your parents say to you? if you don't like it, there's the door. if you are now going to say -- >> court will be clogged with those cases. >> exactly. there's the door, but i want my trust fund on the way out. the judge is going to say, listen, can i see both attorneys in my chambers? maybe you should go to mediation and sit down and talk. this is not something i want to be in a position to rule on. because either side may not like my ruling. >> thanks very much. >> not surprisingly, this is really driving conversation online, as well. check in with carson for that part of it. >> teens versus parents, our facebook page is on fire with this case. there she is. we put on facebook, should teens be allowed to sue their parents? let's go ahead and take some of the responses we got quickly. kathleen wrote, absolutely not, there should be no obligation or expectation that parents must

changeses to the s.a.t. those updates would take effect in 2016. you've seen the shocking scene on a new york highway. a family confronted in their suv by a group of bikers. the man who was run over and paralyzed will speak out. mick jagger known for those signature moves on stage. he says he owes a lot of them to the hardest working man in show business, mr. james brown. now jagger is producing a movie about the godfather of soul, so he took our godfather of soul, willie, behind the scenes. let's start with day three in the trial of oscar pistorius and new drama tied to the case. jeff rossen is covering that trial in pretoria. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you.

happening right now, new issues with security. one of the witnesses says he is actually getting threaten, his words, threatening phone calls from random numbers, angry he's testifying against oscar. one voice mail, i'm quoting, why are you lying? you know oscar didn't kill reeva. the judge also has security detail herself escorting her to and from court. her office wouldn't confirm nor deny she's been getting threat. it goes to show you how much is at stake here as there's more drama on the stand this morning. for the first time this morning, oscar pistorius walked into court without being mobbed. silent and stoic. very different from tuesday when the courthouse chaos caused him to be late for his own trial. >> i don't see your client. >> sometimes he's blocked in by the media. >> reporter: minutes later oscar finally arrives.

>> sorry i'm late. >> that's fine. take a seat. >> reporter: prosecutors are back at it this morning, calling this professional boxer to the stand, who was there when oscar accidentally fired a gun inside a restaurant, just weeks before reeva's death. >> a shot went off in the restaurant and then just complete silence. once the shot went off, i looked down. i was in shock. >> prosecutors also called more of oscar's neighbors who testified off-camera that they heard screaming that night. first this woman -- >> it was awful to hear her shouts before the shots. >> reporter: then her husband took the stand. >> the fear in her voice escalated and it was clear that this person's life was in danger. that's when the first shots were fired. >> reporter: prosecutors are trying to prove their theory that oscar and his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, weren't having

a romantic evening, as he claims, but fighting and he went on a violent rampage, shooting four times through the bathroom door, killing her. he says it's an accident. his defense fired back saying no neighbor could hear that detail 580 feet away. here in pretoria the locals can't get enough of this trial. at this outdoor restaurant, look, they set up a large flat screen right on the street so people can come here and watch live coverage of the trial on south african television. >> we can look. >> reporter: do you think he did it intentionally? >> yes. >> in south africa you sometimes get scared and i can understand how he thought it was an intruder. >> reporter: you think it's an accident? >> yes. >> reporter: we've been talking to the people here in south africa if he knew what he was doing or an accident.

♪ we are back at 7:40 with the confrontation on a new york highway that made headlines across the country. it happened become in september. an suv driver chased by bikers, dragged from his car and beaten in front of his family. shortly before that, one of the motorcycle riders was run over by that suv and is now paralyzed. we're going to talk to him exclusively in a moment. first, more on the events of that fateful day. >> reporter: the brutal attack is unforgettable. a group of bikers surrounding an suv using helmets to shatter its windows before pulling the driver from the car and beating him, all in front of his wife and 2-year-old. 11 have been indicted in connection with the beating. all cases are still pending. the incident dominated headlines

in new york in the fall and created public outrage. >> they were in clear and present danger. not just the man but the driver and they wanted the wife who was holding the child. unacceptable. >> reporter: the events leading up to that attack were captured on a video posted on the internet. it started on the west side highway when dozens of motorcycle surrounded a range rover, blocking it in the middle of the road. one stopped short in the suv, leading to a fender-bender. then many of the bikers got off their bikes, blocking traffic. and after a few tense moments, the suv driver hit the gashgs running over one of the bikers and his motorcycle. neither the suv driver nor the injured biker have been charged with any crime. the injured biker, 32-year-old edward, suffered a torn aorta, severed spine, leading him paralyzed. >> he damaged my son's life

forever. my family forever. >> reporter: after a high-speed chase, the bikers caught up with the suv again. some pounding on the windows and beating the driver in the middle of the street. >> edwin is with us exclusively with us along with his wife and their attorney gloria allred. good morning. >> good morning. >> let me ask you how you're doing, how you're feeling? >> i'm feeling good. first i want to say thank god because if it wasn't for his grace i wouldn't be here to do this interview. glory to jesus christ. >> what have doctors told about you your future and whether you could walk again? >> they told me it was 99.9% that i wasn't going to walk but i refuse to believe that. >> you're working hard in rehab? >> oh, definitely. i want to walk more than they want me to walk. >> let's go back to this day. people say this was a biker gang, a gang. why were you there?

were you part of this gang or group? >> no. i actually came from massachusetts for a ride that i became aware of on the internet, which i have -- i did the ride probably prior to that like twice before. it's just a regular ride. i didn't know nobody there besides the three guys i went with. >> you didn't know the other people involved? >> no, i did not. >> let's talk about what happened. as we just saw, first the suv kind of gets in the middle of these bikers. it bumps somebody on a bike. this suv stops. several of the bikers stop. you were one of them. why did you get off your bike and go over there? >> i wanted to see cruz get hit out of the corner of my eye. >> is he one of the friends you had come with? >> no. we're just all riding together. i'm not -- you know, i just got off like any other human would, you know. i got off to make sure he was all right. i glanced at the driver to see if he was all right, too. >> at that moment did you see

any threats or intimidating action against the driver? >> no. >> did you participate in any threats or intimidating action against the driver? >> definitely not. definitely not. >> obviously, the driver is spooked. he takes off. he hits you. i think when people see that video, you know, you hope that someone in your circumstances wouldn't remember, that you'd be in shock, but i know you remember everything. >> yeah, i was fully conscious for the whole entire thing. >> can you tell me what happened? >> i know i got off my bike to check on cruz and to, you know, i seen the area. as soon as i seen it really wasn't that serious, you know, i was telling guys, let's keep going because i didn't want to ruin the ride. besides that, we were in the middle of the highway. so, i just wanted to keep going. as soon as i turn around, start walking back towards my bike, that's when i got ran over. >> you felt every bit of excruciating pain? >> yes. as soon as he hit me, i shut my eyes. i didn't want to open my eyes

because i knew he had hurt me. the whole time have my eyes closed and i'm like, this dude really hurt me. >> the little girl helped you in that moment? can you tell us about that. >> she kept throwing water on my face to keep me awake. i was aggravated she was throwing water on my face. i was awake and i was aggravated. >> do you blame the driver of the suv who hit you for your injuries? >> no, i don't blame him. i don't blame him because at the end of the day, i'm not him to know what was going through his mind. >> do you agree with the prosecutor's decision not to charge him? >> well, that's a really interesting issue. what we hope, savannah, is that the prosecutor does not look at the public opinion. that the prosecutor looks at the facts, looks at the law. decides whether or not the driver of the suv, who ran over edwin -- >> sounds like you want him to be charged. >> -- paralyzed him for life, whether the driver was in reasonable fear and had any kind of justification for running

over edwin, who just had his back to the suv and he was run over as he's walking back to his motorcycle. >> gloria, i know you haven't yet, but are you planning to sue either the driver or the city of new york? >> we have not filed a civil lawsuit. >> i know. will you rule it out? >> we don't rule anything out at this time. >> so you are considering it? >> we do believe edwin is a very courageous young man. he is completely innocent. he never did anything to the driver expect basically had his back to the car when he was run over. this is is a courageous young woman, his wife diana, she was at his side. she slept at the hospital in a chair every night for months while he was trying to recover from this life-changing, terrible incident. and i just give all credit to her, too. >> you have both been through so much. edwin, i know you've talked about how in the midst of this terrible circumstance, have you found your faith and it's helped. >> you definitely. like i said, man, all glory to

hearing on tuesday. 18-year-old rachel canning has been living with a friend's family because she says her own parents were abusive and kicked her out last fall. her mom and dad, a former police chief, deny any abuse and say the honors student ran away after getting in trouble at school, drinking and refusing to follow house rules. the case returns to court next month. a california teen has been cited for driving without a license because of a crash caught on camera. police say the 17-year-old was trying to park and get a cup of coffee on tuesday but hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. luckily, nobody was hurt as he plowed right into the 7-eleven store and came to rest against a rack of snacks there. well, chilly temperatures and cold rain made it a mardi gras to remember tuesday in new orleans. costumed revelers shared the streets with ponchos and umbrellas. the rain didn't keep families from coming out to enjoy the traditional parades. and business owners say the foul weather actually helped push many revelers off the streets and into their restaurants and

an ugly family dispute played out in a courtroom in new jersey. 18-year-old rachel canning is suing her parents sean and elizabeth for money she says they won't give her to finish high school and go to college. her daughter, an honor roll student, athlete, left their home last fall. the parents deny all that, said there was no abuse, they were just laying down the law for a teen who had been suspended from school, drinking, dating a boy they didn't like. rachel's lawyer argued she needed emergency financial assistance while this case proceeded. the judge saying, quote, do we want to establish a precedent where parents live in constant fear of establishing basic rules of the house? if they institute a rule that junior doesn't like, junior can move out. he can move in with another family, sue for child support, attorneys fees, car, cell phone and a few hundred grand in college. rachel is now living with a family friend, which is another interesting element to this because of the parents, the family friend are the ones kind of behind this.

they hired the lawyer for her so she can sue her own parents for all this money. >> that's very odd, number one. the family friends, you would think if this allegation of abuse is true, you'd instantly call 911, don't say, call an attorney and sue your parents. you take her home or call authorities. >> unless the father is the police chief. >> well, former police chief. nevertheless, you still have to call police and believe they'll do the right thing. i get maybe paying for her high school. she's in high school. but college is insane. >> but by the way, she can go to a public high school. if you've left the home, you're out, you're out. it mean, she's basically without legally declaring herself an emancipated minor. >> this is like an emancipation. that's what she's trying -- >> can't have your toast and eat it, too. >> she doesn't want to be fully emancipated. >> wants them to pay for her lifesty lifestyle. >> well, maybe we get it. dads not liking a boy we dated. i had that happen. my dad made me walk a block to

get into the car. he said the guy couldn't come to our driveway. and we live in the country. >> you had to walk a country mile. >> well, i dumped him because he wasn't worth the miles. >> your feet were getting tired. >> those heels were hurting me. but this is a sad story overall it's come to this. the judge says they should go to counseling. >> i think the judge seems he's being very reasonable in this whole thing. understands you don't want to set this precedent here. >> it's a slippery slope. >> for teens across america who all of a sudden don't like the way their parents are parenting to then take action. >> i want to hear from the neighbors the friends of the family, what are they thinking? >> we have no idea what was happening. >> right. >> don't know the parents, don't know the young lady. if she was in a situation where she felt like she needed to leave the house for her own safety, whatever it was, that is a valid reason. but we don't know. >> and we haven't heard anything like that. in fact, leila just took me to court for her sweet sixteen party. she's not happy with what i planned.

university medical center. good to see you both. >> good morning. >> let's start with this first one. kind of alarming. researcher is testing the noise level of those infant sound machines that folks, parents use to put their babies to sleep. what do they find? >> big stuff for moms and dads, right? before this study came out, there was a study. a couple studies show that background noise, white noise throughout the night is bad for babies. all this stuff about keeping noise on throughout the night might be decreasing the quality and quantity of their sleep. but kudos to the researchers who said maybe this isn't too loud at all. they took 14 products and tested them. every single one when put next to the crib is too loud. remember, the kids' ears a little bit different than ours. they can't be exposed to noises like we can. it's actually unsafe. >> and just to be clear. they didn't find they actually caused damage to the ears, but it could probably cause damage. >> absolutely. >> i think we have to keep in mind, babies are not just small adults. they are developing and we have to -- sometimes when we're trying to do something that we

think is a good thing, we have to be cautious because there could be an inadvertent consequence. >> you do have one of those sound machines, keep it further away. >> keep it further away. and also, these were tested at maximum volume. >> absolutely. >> shut it off when the kid falls asleep. doesn't have to be on all night. >> this one is your field of expertise, i guess, a study found that rage often proceeds a heart attack and may be the trigger to a heart attack. >> yeah. that's right. this study found that the greater the number of anger outbursts in a month, the greater the risk of a heart attack or dying of heart disease. and this is a good lesson for all of us. anger management's important. but i think, you know, we look at a lot of risk factors for heart disease, depression. maybe we should be screening for anger. and i think it's important message for all of us when we do get angry, we want to replace that with something that's more positive. maybe compassion. to get cut off while you're

driving, think of that person maybe having a rough day. what you do when you get angry is hurting yourself. >> is this hold true for both men and women at the same rate? >> it holds true for both. when you're looking at the people screaming and yelling, go, that guy's going to have a heart attack. >> anger increases your blood pressure, your heart rate, inflammation, it triggers a heart attack. we want to try to prevent. >> medications aren't going to solve this, beta blockers, shows it doesn't help the situation. we have to look at things like meditation and yoga. >> take a time-out. >> yeah. absolutely. >> an important study looked at what's called cell free dna test for pregnant women. this is probably one huge advantage. >> biggest advance in my entire career, in the last several decades, this is huge. we do this in my practice already. so there are about 250,000 invasive genetic tests, where

you put a bigger needle and take a piece of placenta out to make sure the baby has the right number of chromosomes. turns out a mom early in the pregnancy has minute amounts of the dna of the baby floating around, and able to capture that dna, the cell-free dna floating around and make sure there's the right nr of chromosomes. doesn't look at everything right now, but looks at the most common abnormalties that typically cause abnormalties in babies. going to reduce the number of invasive tests on moms. >> and also false positives. i've had so many friends where they have a lot of false positives. and this test is a little more accurate than that. >> so it's 100% sensitive, looks like. misses probably close to no problems. and if it catches a problem, it's probably about 50/50 whether it's a real problem versus the other tests if it was a quote, unquote problem, maybe 5% chance it was a real issue. really decrease the false positives. >> still cost prohibitive, though. but i think like most new technologies over time.

the overuse of antibiotics in u.s. hospitals is putting patients at risk. according to a new government study, doctors in some hospitals provide three times as many antibiotics for patients as physicians in other facilities. overprescribing antibiotics is making some drugs less effective because super bugs resistant to them are developing so fast. the practice can also make patients vulnerable to other types of infections. gm is apologizing this morning for the recent recall of nearly 1.4 million vehicles involving air bags that don't deploy due to faulty ignition switches. the automaker is aware of 31 crashes and 13 deaths. reports show gm engineers have known about the issue since 2004 but kept using the same ignition switches until at least late 2006. in a letter to the employees, ceo mary berra says she's personally leading an internal review. united airlines cracking down on oversize carry-on bags. workers are sending passengers whose bags exceed the dimensions

finding a way to inspire through, you know, everything that it is we're doing and showing there's no barriers too big. >> wow. >> bethany, this happened for you at a young age, just a teenager out on the surf doing what you love to do. where did you find the guts and the courage at that age to say, you know what, i'm getting right back on my board, which you did how long after the incident? it wasn't long. >> i started surfing less than a month later. i went out the day before thanksgiving and lost my arm on halloween. but yeah, one thing about "current," the documentary that excited me to be a part of this was my passion for the ocean. and i believe that the gift god's given us to go and heal. going out surfing was the best -- one of the best decisions i made was just like getting back on the horse and overcoming my fears. and ultimately i was pretty determined. >> and mallory, i think you said the same thing. the fear you won't be able to do it again but you face that fear

and you do it. >> yeah. you know, when i was first paralyzed, i was told, obviously, all the things i would never do again. you can't walk, all these things that you may not have in life. and that was really tough. and so this past year and just through the documentary and working with make a hero and producing "the current" has been amazing. because it's all about showcasing amazing abilities. we all have disabilities, we have other disabilities too, and it can be spiritual, financial, family. and the current really does a good job of just showing what is possible when we choose to have a positive attitude. and we choose to face our challenges, and just enjoy life. >> bethany, what's the message from your experience for people watching who may have a disability, who may be wondering if they can get back up on whatever their surf board in life is. what do you say to them? >> i say, just especially just to be thankful for what you do have in life and for the
